Feedback Formats

Providing feedback along with marks gives the student a much better idea of how they did, and can help them become more aware of which areas they need to improve.

Rubrics

When choosing whether to use a rubric for providing marks and feedback, consider the following points:

  • They're good for teams of markers because they help keep the marking and feedback consistent
  • Rubrics are not good with contextual information and varied assignments
  • They can be harder for students to print off and show to employers (if need be)

If you have decided to use a rubric, but are not sure how to create one, then the instructional videos on the Creating a Rubric page will walk you through that process.

Performa

When choosing whether to use a performa for providing marks and feedback, consider the following points:

  • They enable flexible grading
  • Performa are better to use for a smaller class with less markers
  • They are easy for students to print off and show to employers (if need be)

If you have decided to use a performa, but would like some help getting started, then the Performa Template document is a great starting point. When using the template document, the overall grade field can be calculated automatically for you once you have entered values into the "Mark Weighting" and "Grade" columns. To do this, highlight the number in the "Overall grade" cell, right-click and select "Update Field". If you add more rows into the table then you need to highlight the number in the "Overall grade" cell, select "Layout" from the table menu in the ribbon, and then click "fx". This will open up the formula associated wit the cell which you can adjust to include your newly added or removed rows.
